06.13.13Pettson and Findus get a pair of new Android appsSwedish author Sven Nordqvist's series of books about Pettson and Findus have sold 6m copies around the world, and already spawned a fun iOS app. Now the old farmer and his cat are heading to Android. Publisher Filimundus has released Pettson's Jigsaw Puzzle and Pettson's Memo for Android devices. The first offers six digital jigsaw puzzles, with varying difficulty to suit different ages, and a choice of English, German or Swedish language. Pettson's Memo, meanwhile, is a memory-matching game with six modes: regular, picture, math, sound, logic and 'memory memory'. 06.13.13Babar the Elephant (and his grandson Badou) is getting some appsHere's something to trumpet: a range of storybook apps is on the way based on Babar and the Adventures of Badou, the latest TV series starring cartoon elephant Babar. (Well, his grandson and heir Badou, if we're being accurate.) Developer Cupcake Digital is making the apps: the same company that recently brought Fraggle Rock back as an app, and which has also been making apps based on TV character Wubbzy. The first Babar and the Adventures of Badou apps will be released this Autumn on iPhone, iPad and Android – the latter including Amazon's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook tablets.

06.13.13Despicable Me: Minion Rush runs onto iOS and AndroidWe love the beasties in the Despicable Me movies, so we're pleased to see them getting their own mobile game. It's called Despicable Me: Minion Rush. Available for iPhone, iPad and Android, it's an 'endless runner' game in the same vein as Temple Rush. It sees you playing as one of the films' Minions, running through various locations swiping to turn, jump and slide your way past obstacles. Along the way, you have to collect bananas and defeat villains, while adding costumes, weapons and power-ups to customise your Minion to suit the way you play the game. Continue Reading...

05.30.13Out now: Toca Boca’s Toca Hair Salon 2 for AndroidEarlier this week, we reported that Toca Boca Android apps were on the way. We didn't know quite how close they were. Toca Hair Salon 2 has been released on the Google Play store today. The app costs 64p in a 66%-off launch promotion, and will run on Android smartphones and tablets alike. As on iOS, the app lets your children play hairdressers with six colourful characters, cutting, styling and colouring their hair before taking snapshots to preserve their creativity. 05.23.13Grimm’s Bookshelf app offers playable fairytale demos for childrenWe've written about many of the fairytale storybook-apps from publisher StoryToys, most recently its pop-up take on The Jungle Book. Now it's bringing them all together in one app. It's called Grimm's Bookshelf, and is pitched as a way for parents and children to sample all of StoryToys' apps in one place, playing a free game from each storybook, buying apps that they like the look of, and launching every StoryToys app that they own from within the app too. The company says it'll use the Bookshelf app to let parents know about promotions, discounts and new/future apps as well. The games ...

05.22.13Little Rooster book-app gets ‘experimental’ on iPad and AndroidIt sounds like MOME TechLab in Hungary has been looking at as many children's book-apps as we have. Their aim, though, has been to use that knowledge to make their own. "After having analysed dozens of interactive book titles in the app stores, we prepared for 6-8 year old kids an interactive version of a well-known Hungarian folk tale, published by László Arany," explains the app store listing for the result: Little Rooster and his Diamond Halfpenny. 05.20.13The Jungle Book gets the StoryToys pop-up book-app treatmentA new version of Rudyard Kipling's story The Jungle Book has popped up on the app stores for iOS and Android... literally. The Jungle Book is the work of StoryToys – the latest classic tale to be turned into a virtual pop-up storybook by the developer. Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera and the nefarious Shere Khan are all present and correct with 3D animated scenes, music and sound effects, and some simple mini-games to keep children interested. 05.16.13Dr Seuss’ The Butter Battle Book comes to iOS and AndroidAnother week, another Dr Seuss book being turned into an app. And the fact that The Butter Battle Book isn't one of his most famous works actually makes it more appealing to us. The storyline focuses on feuding Yooks and Zooks, whose battle is based in part on ferocious disagreement on whether to eat bread with the butter side up or down.
