05.24.13Symmetry School iPad app teaches geometry to kidsWe know there's a lot of demand from parents for good maths apps for kids (or math apps for kids, if you're in the US!), so we think PixelSoup's new app Symmetry School: Learning Geometry could be a hit. They describe it as a "captivating, brain-twisting game designed to support and encourage mathematical development in your child", designed for kids of varying ages and abilities. It's an educational game set in the mountains, with an Alpine climbing theme designed to make maths fun for children aged 6-12. "Whether you're tapping targets to score points or fend your flank from a heard of hard-charging sheep, you'll love every minute of the game that turns standard math tables into a mountain of fun," explains its App Store listing. 04.22.13Meet Wombi Apps’ Shape, Letter and Number MonstersBack in 2011, Swedish developer Wombi Apps launched a fun educational app called Color Monster, featuring a friendly beast teaching children their colours. Now, in 2013, he's got some friends. Wombi has launched three new apps in the series: Shape Monster, Number Monster and Letter Monster. You can probably tell what they're each teaching from the titles. Shape Monster is a chef, who tells children what shape foodstuffs he wants them to pass him from the bottom of the screen. 04.17.13Mystery Math Town iPad game gets spooky with numbersThere are quite a few app developers experimenting with maths-based games on iPhone and iPad. Artgig Studio is one of them, and its Mystery Math Town game is well worth a look. Aimed at 6-12 year-olds, the game is set in the spooky setting of Mystery Math Town, although the main character isn't scary: he's a "friendly and curious little ghost" who's trying to rescue fireflies. Your child's job is to help using their mathematical skills, solving addition, subtraction and multiplication sums to unlock rooms and passages, while also meeting the quirky townspeople through their talking portraits. 01.25.13Can you count on Learn Maths with Beluga?Well, obviously you can: it's a maths app for iPad, so counting is exactly what it's for. Released this week, it's a very interesting new educational app for children. The idea: "a journey through the whole of mathematics" that gets kids visiting virtual islands and completing mathematical challenges for rewards. Its developer Beluga Learning reckons there is already hundreds of hours of gameplay, with more to come. Words are read out loud to help younger children know what to do, and the company promises it's been "extensively researched and tested on students" to make sure it's up to scratch.
